With Simona Halep out of the picture, the pressure will be on Bianca Andreescu more than ever to mount a deep run at the US Open as one of the favourites. She faces Caroline Wozniacki for a spot in the fourth round, with the Dane hoping to get close to a third US Open final.
Andreescu had never made it past the second round of a slam before this week but is probably the second or third favourite for the whole tournament, a testament to the speed in which she has risen up the rankings and improved in 2019. Andreescu already has two huge titles at Indian Wells and Toronto this year, with some impressive wins along the way. The expectations may seem crazy for the youngster but in reality aren’t too out there, given what she has shown on court when fully fit. She beat Kirsten Flipkens to move into the third round, eventually figuring out the trickery of the Belgian to win in straight sets 6-3 7-5. “Flipkens is a tricky opponent to play,” Andreescu said afterwards. “She doesn’t give you any rhythm. I’m just really happy with how I managed to deal with what she gave me and with my composure out there.”
Wozniacki dealt with a vocal home crowd and a feisty performance from Danielle Collins to make it into the third round, coming through in three sets 4-6 6-3 6-4. It’s a tournament she has enjoyed playing at in the past and the site of her best runs until she finally broke her slam duck in Australia. “I love playing out on that court (Arthur Ashe). It’s a very special court for me.” she said “It [was] two very different matches. The first match I got to play some longer rallies. This match, it was really all about just staying patient and trying to stay aggressive when I had the opportunity.”
The match with Andreescu is likely to be more of the latter for Wozniacki and it will be a fascinating test for the Canadian if Wozniacki brings her A-game defensively. Andreescu is wary of the threat she poses, even if her powers are on the wane. “I kind of know what to expect, if I play her. I know that she’s an incredible fighter. She runs every ball down, and I know that it’s not going to be easy. I’m just going to go out there and play my game.” Andreescu said.
