In one of the more competitive sections of the draw, Borna Coric and Grigor Dimitrov look to move one step closer to being the quarter finalist when they face off on Wednesday. Both Alex de Minaur and Kei Nishikori will be among those hoping to thwart the winner here with a fourth round matchup expected to take place between one of each of these pairings.
Dimitrov came into this tournament seeded 7th two years ago but is now not even ranked inside the top 70 after some disastrous performances. He started the season respectably in Australia but has been out of form since with just two more tournaments where he won more than once match for the rest of the year. He didn’t have it all his own way against an Andreas Seppi who is winding down his career, needing four sets to advance.
Coric is back at his career high ranking of 12 despite winning just one match across Canada and Cincinnati. He bounced back with a routine win over Evgeny Donskoy, beating the Russian 7-6 6-3 6-0. Coric didn’t face a break point in the match while gradually growing into the match on return – breaking once in the second set and twice in the third respectively.
The Croatian is a tough player to break down and remains strong in longer rallies, something that is definitely going to work in his favour against an opponent low on confidence like Dimitrov. A higher level may be needed in future matches in this tournament but he should have enough about him to defeat the Bulgarian who will struggle as the match draws on.
Prediction – Borna Coric in four sets
