Caroline Wozniacki has a surprisingly good chance of beating her best Wimbledon run this fortnight with two winnable clashes standing between her and a first quarter final at SW19. She will be play Shuai Zhang on Friday with the winner facing either Vikotrija Golubic or Dayana Yastremska on Monday.
Wozniacki was far from stellar in round one, eventually progressing after Sara Sorribes Tormo was forced to retire. Veronika Kudermertova had defeated the Dane at the French Open but was unable to do the double as Wozniacki edged through 7-6 6-3. Wozniacki will have been pleased to have not faced a single break point in the win, while creating 12 altogether – even if only 2 were taken.
Wozniacki may be happy to have avoided Caroline Garcia, her expected round three opponent. The Frenchwoman is often dangerous and could have troubled Wozniacki but Zhang beat her in round one and built on that with a comfortable win over Yanina Wickmayer in round two. It is the Chinese star’s first time past the first round, having failed on her previous five occasions to win her first match.
Wozniacki has a good record at Eastbourne, winning it previously in addition to several deep runs, suggesting her problems may lie with Wimbledon rather than grass itself. Several of her losses have been to ultra aggressive players, for whom her defensive style is much easier to break down at SW19. Zhang may not fit into that exactly but does possess enough power to at least trouble her opponent.
Prediction – Caroline Wozniacki in three sets
