It will be an all-German affair to open Centre Court on Day 2 at Wimbledon as defending champion Angelique Kerber gets the customary opening slot for her match against Tatjana Maria. Her win over Serena Williams made it three slams for Kerber, including two at SW19.

Maria plays a more old school grass game, employing plenty of variety and slicing compared to many these days. It was a welcome switch to the grass for after six straight losses on the clay. She followed up a semi final at Surbiton 100k with another one at WTA level, taking the first set before falling apart in the deciding two sets against Donna Vekic. Maria’s one WTA title came on the grass, winning the Mallorca event in 2018.
Kerber remains one of the favourites for this tournament as defending champion. Her opening round loss at the French Open didn’t come as a major shock but it hasn’t impacted her coming into the grass season. She made the semi finals of Mallorca and the final of Eastbourne. While she was outplayed in the latter by Karolina Pliskova, it was still a productive grass swing for her with plenty of matches under her belt. “I will try to take the positive things from the whole week, from the last two weeks before going to Wimbledon now.” she said after that match.
“I know, like, I know her very well. She likes to play on grass, as well. It will be not the easy first match. Also mentally. But, you know, doesn’t matter against who you play. I mean, doesn’t matter which opponents are on the other side. My goal is to find my rhythm.” she said on Maria.
Prediction – Angelique Kerber in straight sets
