The highlight of Sunday’s schedule at Roland Garros is undoubtedly the matchup between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Stanislas Wawrinka. Tsitsipas is one of the brightest young star on the tour right now and a legitimate contender for the title while Wawrinka seeks to get back to his very best, having won this tournament back in 2015.

Wawrinka’s run of service holds finally ended in round three but he was still very impressive in a straight sets win against Grigor Dimitrov, hitting 57 winners in the 7-6 7-6 7-6. He finally looks to have gained some confidence, having come into the tournament in less than great form. “I think it was another great match after the run against [Cristian] Garin. I think against Grigor, it was a really tough battle. We both played well,” Wawrinka said.
Both Wawrinka and Tsitsipas had to complete their matches overnight but it was Tsitsipas who was on court a bit longer, having failed to secure the third set when 2 games from victory. It could have been dangerous for him as he was twice down a break in the fourth set but fought back to advance with a 7-5 6-3 6-7 7-6 win. Unsurprisingly, his modest run to the fourth round is the best by a Greek for over 70 years.
At his best, it’s clear to all the threat that Wawrinka poses. He moves well and can outhit the best of them, as he has done in the past in Paris. “It seems like he has found his form, his game. And as we all know, he did quite well plenty of times, not just once,” Tsitsipas said. “He’s a dangerous player. He knows clay very well. He has a big game.”
It will be the first meeting between the two with the winner being rewarded with an expected quarter final against Roger Federer. Tsitsipas already has a slam win against Federer this year while Wawrinka would have his best opportunity of victory on this surface.
