The highlight of the women’s draw on Sunday is definitely the fourth round clash between Sloane Stephens and Garbine Muguruza. There is a huge opportunity for the winner of this match, who would either be the highest or second highest seed depending on who wins and how the other three matches play out.

Muguruza has not had a great deal to shout about in slams since winning Wimbledon in 2017, her semi final run in Paris last year being the only shining spot. Her power tennis has suffered consistency wise in the past year but she could be ready to mount a surprise charge to the finals if she carries on. She eased past Elina Svitolina in round three, breaking the Ukranian 7 times in a 6-3 6-3 victory. “I feel very good in this tournament,” Muguruza said afterwards. “I have always loved it since I was a little girl. I also love the clay court. I don’t know what it is about French Open that gives me always, like, a nice mood and my tennis develops much better.”
Last year’s losing finalist Stephens is the highest seed in the bottom half and will feel confident she can at least repeat last year’s performance. She needed three sets to beat Polona Hercog and may well feel disappointed she couldn’t close it out on any of the four match points she held on serve in the second set of her 6-3 5-7 6-4 victory. It was far from her best performance but the win will be all that matters despite hitting over 40 unforced errors.
It will be the third match between the pair, with both players earning comfortable wins on hard courts so far. The winner is likely to be considered the favourite to make the final from the bottom half and possibly for the whole tournament, as the draw continues to break down.
Prediction – Garbine Muguruza in three sets
