Simona Halep looks to continue her run in Madrid on Tuesday morning, taking on Johanna Konta for a spot in the third round. The Romanian is still in with a chance of taking the No.1 spot after this week but has to rely on an early exit from Naomi Osaka.

Somewhat unfairly, Konta was forced into action on Sunday less than 24 hours after playing the final in Rabat. However, it did not really impact her as she eased to victory over Alison Riske. There were no signs of a let down after her loss to Maria Sakkari as she broke four times in a 6-4 6-1 victory over the American.
Halep has had a good start in the Spanish capital, picking up a win in the doubles to add to her first round victory over Margarita Gasparyan. It was easy for her for large parts of the 6-0 6-4 win over the qualifier but there were some late nerves as she almost blew a 5-2 lead in the second set. She was dominant on return, breaking six times and winning over 60% on her opponent’s first serve. “It was a good match, even if the first set was fast. The second one was tougher, and I feel happy that I could win this match, I did everything I could today and I’m happy with the victory.” the Romanian said afterwards.
Konta should provide a tougher test for Halep although the Brit’s 3-2 record in the head to head doesn’t really tell the whole story. Konta won three tight matches on grass and hard court while the one meeting on this surface was a dominant win for Halep in Fed Cup action. The route to the semi finals looks far from threatening for Halep, whose biggest threat Elina Svitolina was knocked out in the opening round by Pauline Parmentier.
