It’s a case of more of the same for Rafael Nadal in round two at the French Open. The 11 time champion will play another German called Yannick on Tuesday, this time being Yannick Maden. The 29 year-old had not been a top 100 player in his career before but could enter it after this tournament.
Maden has been hanging around the top 150 for the past year and has been a fairly consistent Challenger Tour player, making 4 finals in the past 12 months – including back to back in March. He beat Kimmer Coppejans to earn a match on the big stage, coming through in straight sets against the Belgian. “[It was] a tough battle. He played also a lot from the baseline, like myself. Long rallies, long games. Lots of ups and downs. Tough mentally and physically.” he said of the win.
Nadal cruised to victory in his opener against Yannick Hanfmann, dominating on serve against the qualifier. He was not broken in the 6-2 6-1 6-3 win and faced break points in just one game, saving all four in the first one of the match. “I did a lot of things well,” he said. “I did not make many mistakes, being very solid all the time. [I’m] happy to be through to the second round, and that’s the main thing today in straight sets, positive feelings.
Nadal is never going to get complacent but will be looking ahead to tougher tests in the draw. 27th seed David Goffin could be up next for Nadal. The Belgian does have a win in their four meetings but has been overwhelming in each of their 3 clay matches – losing all of them in straight sets.
Prediction – Rafael Nadal in straight sets
