Serena Williams is still seeking her first title since her return after giving birth. She will play Rebecca Peterson in her opener at the Miami Open, a tournament she has won eight times in total. It’s her first meeting against the Swede, who has only established herself as a top 100 player over the last 12 months. The winner will face either Johanna Konta or Qiang Wang in round three.
Peterson was rewarded with a clash against Serena on Stadium court after winning a wild three setter with Laura Siegemund. In the 6-1 5-7 7-5 victory, she served for the match in both the second and the third set. She failed to convert match points on both occasions, including three straight at 5-4 in the third. With 4 straight losses, pulling this one out will have been a welcome relief to the Swede.
Serena didn’t last long at Indian Wells, retiring in her second match against Garbine Muguruza. She looked out of sorts for much of the match, with her serve affected in particular. She will be hoping to have recovered from the viral illness that caused her to finish the match prematurely, especially with her most prolific event up this fortnight.
Prediction – Serena Williams in straight sets
