Heading the night session on Tuesday is the stand out match of the men’s draw so far. Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka will face off in an all-Swiss affair in what will be their 25th career meeting. Wawrinka has played him tougher a few more times recently but the head to head still makes for bad reading at 3-21. Check out the Federer vs Wawrinka H2H.
Federer could have found himself dragged into a third set against Peter Gojowczyk, having been down a break in the second set of his 6-1 7-5 win. Also down 0-40 later on in the set on serve, he was relieved to pull this one out. I think I struggled a little bit with my serving in that second set and that gave him chances. I think because he was serving better, I think he started to swing more freely, then it was tough.” he said. “I’m really happy I found a way in that second set, actually.”
Wawrinka had some strong wins in Rotterdam, suggesting he is edging closer to his best. Here, he has has to tough it out in three setters against Daniel Evans and now Marton Fucsovics. He avoided disappointment after failing to serve out the decider initially, converting his fifth match point for a 6-4 6-7 7-5 victory. Both players had over 20 break points with Stan saving 21 of 25 including 4 on his second serving out attempt. “Most important is to win two matches here, to win the way I won tonight. It was tough battle, fighting, staying there physically, tennis-wise, mentally, also. Those matches I know that can help me to get some big result.” a delighted Wawrinka said afterwards.
Federer is fairly confident his countryman will be at the top of the game once more. “I think, from what I’m gathering, if he’s in no pain or injury-free, I think we will see a great Stan here, down the road, without a doubt, because I know what he can do. I think a lot of Stan. He’s got all the different options how to win points. He’s a fighter and a winner. Yeah, I hope he’s going to be in the top 20, top 10 very soon again.” said Federer.
