Roger Federer continues his hunt for another Miami title on Monday afternoon, facing Filip Krajinovic for a place in the fourth round. They played twice last year with Federer winning both, although the second meeting in Basel was a tight three setter.
Krajinovic has followed up his strong Indian Wells showing with a pair of good wins to begin this tournament. He beat Pierre Hugues Herbert in his first match before winning a thriller over Stanislas Wawrinka, denying a Federer-Wawrinka clash for the second week running. He showed great fight to come back from a break down in the final set as well as down 2-5* in the deciding tiebreak.
Federer was very much below par in his three set victory against Radu Albot, eventually advancing with a 4-6 7-5 6-3 win. With Albot having break chances at 3-3 in both the second and third set, this could have gone much worse for him. ‘There’s definitely really some good elements there in the game, but I did struggle obviously. I’m very, very happy that I found a way.” he said afterwards.
Federer will be on high alert having almost fell to an unheralded player in the previous round. Krajinovic, a one time Masters 1000 finalist, is playing beyond his current ranking outside the top 100 but it may not be enough to shock a second straight Swiss player.
Prediction – Roger Federer in straight sets
