Petra Kvitova now has the World No.1 ranking in her grasp after Naomi Osaka’s early loss at the Miami Open. She will take the top spot with a final unless she loses to Simona Halep there. Kvitova faces Caroline Garcia for a spot in the next round.
Having lost to Donna Vekic once already this year, the Czech may have had concerns going into their meeting. She toughed out a three set win though, winning 6-4 3-6 6-4. It wasn’t a top notch serving performance from her, hitting just 54% first serve for the match, but she did enough on key points in the decider to advance. “I’m glad that in the third set I stayed on my serve, you know, just one break over there. I’m really happy that I got the win.” she said afterwards.
Garcia looks to have got going after a disappointing start to the year. She backed up her win over former champ Victoria Azarenka by dominating Julia Goerges in the third round. She won the first seven games of her match against the German, eventually coming out on top 6-0 7-5. She served 80% and denied Goerges on each of her six break opportunities.
Despite never making No. 1, Kvitova isn’t too focused on that goal right now. “Right now is not really important to me. Important was that I won today. I did have few chances to be world No. 1 already in my career, and I didn’t just make it.” she said. “Actually I already achieved big things before, and since my comeback, as well, so I’m really satisfied with everything already.”
Kvitova has to be favoured if she is on her game but it will be a big test for her dealing with Miami conditions early in the afternoon. She is 3-3 against Garcia but has lost two of the last three since her return.
Prediction – Petra Kvitova in three sets
