The WTA field is now down to 8 at Indian Wells with Garbine Muguruza kicking off the quarter finals against Bianca Andreescu. Muguruza is finally looking to get going after a stop start opening to the season but will have it tough against one of the form players of 2019. Check out the Muguruza vs Andreescu stats.
Muguruza has ensured she will not her free falling ranking will go any lower with a strong fortnight so far. In danger of falling out the top 20, she has avoided that with a run that includes wins over Kiki Bertens and Serena Williams. “I’m happy about the level I played, and also how I managed the intensity of the game and not let drop, basically, nothing during the whole match.” she said following her comeback win over Bertens.
Andreescu has had a stunning start to 2019, going 12-3 in WTA main draw matches. The Canadian was always seen as a top prospect but her level of improvement this year has been outstanding. She has yet to drop a set this tournament, most recently defeating Qiang Wang 7-5 6-2. Now about to enter the top 50, she is on a huge high right now. “I think confidence is almost everything for a player. If you trust your shots, if you trust your game, good things always happen. I think that’s what’s happening with me right now
“I gave myself another chance to play another match, another match here, and go deeper and deeper. That’s what I want, honestly, to play a lot of matches, to face the best players, and to keep up a good level.” Muguruza added. The Spaniard, who has carved out a reputation as a big match player after her two slams, will see this a great opportunity for another big title. The winner plays either Marketa Vondrousova or Elina Svitolina in the final.
