The pick of the quarter final matches on the women’s side undoubtedly has to be that between former champion Serena Williams and Karolina Pliskova. The pair have played three times so far with Serena leading the head to head 2-1. Both women have wins at the US Open on the way to the final, Serena in 2018 and Pliskova in 2016. Check out the Serena Williams vs Pliskova H2H stats.
Pliskova’s fourth round match with Garbine Muguruza looked a great match on paper but was never really competitive due to a dominant performance from the Czech. She hit 23 winners overall but far more impressive was her tiny total of 3 unforced errors, unusual for a player with a fairly high risk game. “I felt confident even coming to this match because I beat her so many times. I like these conditions here, I’ve been playing well the last couple of matches.” she said. “I didn’t miss much. I was just putting pressure on her today. I think I was serving well, so there was not many things which I did wrong today. I was just too solid.”
Serena had cruised through the opening week but finally got the test she was looking for against Simona Halep. The World No.1 didn’t shrink against Serena and pushed her all the way, having led 3-2 in the deciding set before eventually the six time champion took it 6-1 4-6 6-4. The vital break came a service game later, the only one in the entire third set. “I think overall I’m hanging in there. I think overall I’m solid. I can definitely go to a new level. I have to if I want to stay in the tournament.” Serena said.
“She’s always someone that comes out and serves big and plays well. I’ve got to return a little bit better the next day that we play, but I will be ready.” Serena said on her next opponent. The Halep match should put her in good stead for Pliskova and she is clearly powerful enough to go blow for blow with Pliskova. However, should the Czech put up similar winner figures – it would be hard to bet against her.
