Naomi Osaka making back to back slam finals is now becoming a realistic prospect with the Japanese star in the last 8. She plays Elina Svitolina for a spot in the semi-finals where a potential rematch with Serena Williams awaits. Despite being a former No.3, Svitolina is still yet to make a semi final having lost on three occasions at this stage of a slam previously. Check out the Osaka vs Svitolina H2H.
Svitolina advanced after a bizarre three setter with Madison Keys, winning 6-2 1-6 6-1. She had received treatment just before winning the first set and the effects seemed to be worsening as she gave away the second set rather quickly. However, she was helped along in the decider by a an error prone Keys who has to be disappointed at her failure to remain solid against a struggling opponent. “I try to be there all the time with my game, try to bring the best. And I know that I can challenge good players and I can win.” Svitolina said afterwards. “You know, as I already said, the Singapore week showed that I can be, you know, out there and winning tough matches. Yeah, just be out there and win big matches.”
Osaka hasn’t had it easy on her way to the quarter finals, following up a tough win over Su Wei Hsieh with a comeback victory against Anastasija Sevastova. It was a similar type of opponent for Osaka but she didn’t have to recover from as large as a deficit as she did vs Hsieh. Surprisingly, she has already surpassed 2018 for matches won from a set down – something put down to a large self belief. “I think the biggest thing for me is the belief. I think I believe in myself more this year than I have last year. Like in Brisbane, I played the same sort of match, like, I lost the first set and I managed to win again. And it was against the same player. So I think just having that experience.” she said.
“I have played her multiple times now, and I know she’s a very consistent player and when she has the chance she does like to attack. I think playing her is going to be very difficult for me.” Osaka said. The US Open champion is 2-3 against Svitolina but already seems to have the makings of a big match player if this fortnight and the US Open is anything to go by.
Prediction – Naomi Osaka in three sets
