Novak Djokovic can book his place in the quarter finals of the US Open on Monday with an expected meeting with Roger Federer on the cards. He will play Portgual’s Joao Sousa, whom he holds a career 4-0 record against.
Sousa’s run to the fourth round has been impressive, notching two Top 20 scalps to get this far. After a 5th set retirement from Pablo Carreno Busta in round two, he beat Lucas Pouille in four sets. He played huge at the big moments, winning three tiebreaks and twice breaking when his opponent was serving for a set.
Djokovic stepped it up a gear in his third round match against Richard Gasquet, dominating the Frenchman in a 6-2 6-3 6-3 victory. He had not been at his best in previous rounds but had it much better this time round, not giving up his serve once in the win. “It was the best match of the week so far, without a doubt. One of the best performances I had in the hard court season after Wimbledon.” a delighted Djokovic said afterwards. “I was lucky to really save some crucial breakpoints in the third set. If he got back that break, who knows. He was playing well.”
“He’s a fighter. He grinds. He doesn’t give you too many free points. He makes you run. He loves to run. Loves to run around his backhand, hit some forehands. Plays pretty flat.” Djokovic said of Sousa. The 6th seed remains the favourite for the tournament and easing into the quarter finals with a tough test a head will put him in good stead for Wednesday night.
