Having made just one slam quarter-final before this year, John Isner is finally beginning to see his hard work pay off with two straight following his Wimbledon semi-final. While he will be the underdog, he does have a winnable match this time round with Juan Martin Del Potro facing him for a spot in the semi-finals.
Isner has not cruised through the first week in the way he would have hoped to, dropping 5 sets so far. 2 of them were to Milos Raonic in the previous round although their game style meant that a 5 setter lasted just over 3 hours. More shockingly, there were no tiebreaks with Isner breaking serve four times overall. “I feel very mentally tough. I think this year, since Miami of course, I really turned a corner there. There are some matches I’ve played where I only just rely on my serve. But I think more times than not this year I’ve shown some other ability.” the American said on what has changed this for him.
Del Porto has been cruising so far this fortnight, picking up a fourth consecutive straight sets to make the quarter finals. He was broken just once in the 6-4 6-3 6-1 win over Borna Coric, a player who has been sharply on the rise in 2018. With Roger Federer’s exit, Del Potro is the only player remaining in the draw who has yet to drop a set. “I’m feeling okay. I think my confidence is in a high level. I know I could play even best tennis. So I am looking forward for that in the next round.” he said afterwards.
Isner was very complimentary when talking about what makes Del Porto a special player. “We all know his weapons. From his left wrist injury, he’s got a slice backhand that’s really good now. We all know about his serve. Of course we all know about his forehand. But he’s added a really, really good slice backhand to his game. That’s one of the reasons he’s back to top five at No. 3 in the world.” he said. Del Potro leads the head to head 7-4, including a win at Roland Garros this year. Both players are at the top of their games right now and it could prove to be a tough match for the Argentinian, with a home crowd likely to be well behind their countryman.
Prediction – Juan Martin Del Potro in 4 sets
