Novak Djokovic continues his quest for a second consecutive slam in the night session on Day 4, taking on a home player in Tennys Sandgren. Djokovic will be relieved at his spot in the schedule having had a tough time of it in the New York heat in his opening match. The quarter final showdown with Roger Federer seems inevitable but Djokovic must ensure he remains focused with several tough seeded opponents in his way first, including Richard Gasquet in round three.
Sandgren first made a name for himself with his run to the quarter finals of the Australian Open at the start of the year but has found it tough since. He had won just three of his last thirteen coming into the tournament but it didn’t show as he eased past Viktor Troicki in straight sets to deny an all-Serbian round two. He had been winless in the other four slam main draws played, including last year’s US Open.
Djokovic is now at a 7 match winning streak, adding a four set win over Marton Fucsovics to his Cincinnati title. After splitting the opening two sets, he found himself down 4-2 in the third before raising his game and running off the final eight games of the match for victory as his better conditioning began to have an impact. “It was a tough one,” he said. “We both struggled. We were not the only ones today. At 4-3 in the third, I managed to play a good game. I saw that he’s starting to slow down a bit. He started to experience some physical issues. That’s where I felt to use this opportunity and try and get back in the match.”
Conditions will be far more favourable and should ensure Djokovic has a fairly straight forward time on Arthur Ashe Stadium this evening.
