US Open favourite Novak Djokovic begins his chase for slam number 14 on Tuesday evening when he takes on Marton Fucsovics for a spot in the second round in New York. The Serbian finally looks back to his best after a successful few months.
At 26, Fucsovics has been having the best season of his life. He heads into the tournament at a career high ranking of 40, most notably helped by a fourth round in Melbourne and his Geneva title just before the French Open. However, he looks set to remain winless in main draws in New York having lost in both of the past two years.
Djokovic signalled his return with the Wimbledon title in early July and added the Cincinnati title to that, beating Roger Federer in the final just over a week ago. It saw him become the first player to win all nine current Masters 1000 events, a mightily impressive feat. “You know, coming in this year, obviously the Wimbledon win made things quite different for me in terms of approach to both Toronto and Cincinnati. So I felt more confident on the court. I felt, you know, I just need to get few more matches.” he said of his mindset after that match.
Against an opponent without a top 10 career win, it should be fairly routine for the sixth seed. He could face a fellow Serbian in round two with Viktor Troicki a potential opponent.
Prediction – Novak Djokovic in three sets
