Svitolina has been incredibly impressive this week as she seeks to defend her title. She beat Petra Martic, Daria Kasatkina and Angelique Kerber to make the semi finals, where she handily defeated the rising Anett Kontaveit to make the final. She dealt with the big hitting of the Estonian very well while also breaking four times in the 6-4 6-3 victory. “I’m very proud of this, that I could stay really consistent all match.” she said afterwards. “Last year I was more, you know, gaining experience, gaining confidence. This year, you know, I tried to think that this is a part of my game, a part of me…I’m happy the way I handled and the way I played today under pressure this week against some really good players.”
Halep and Maria Sharapova once more had a dramatic encounter with Halep this time advancing in three sets for her first win over Sharapova on clay. “[My] serve didn’t work that well today, but also, she’s a good returner so it’s always tough. I was confident to return her serve, and I think I did a great job today, all match,” Halep said on the match. Halep broke at will in the 4-6 6-1 6-4 victory, with 11 breaks overall. “I just changed a little bit the game. I tried to be aggressive the whole match, even if sometimes I went too far. I think I played the best match on clay, and I’m really happy that — even if she played her best, in my opinion today — I won the match.”
Not long after losing the Rome final, Halep faced off with Svitolina once more at Roland Garros last year. She came from 6-3 5-1 down to stun Svitolina in a match that is sure to be in the No. 4 seed’s head as she goes on to court this afternoon.
