World No. 1 Simona Halep will be hoping for a less stressful time on court when she faces Agnieszka Radwanska early on Saturday afternoon in the third round of the Miami Open. The Romanian will be boosted by events on Friday which saw Caroline Wozniacki and Indian Wells champ Naomi Osaka both eliminated.
Halep’s opening match against Oceane Dodin looked a routine one on paper, especially with injury doubts over the Frenchwoman. However, that wasn’t the case with an inspired display of power hitting by Dodin. She held a *4-3 lead in the deciding set but Halep bounced back to win the final three games of the match. “I played bad, but, you know, you have these days, and when you don’t give up, is the most important thing. I think that’s why I won today, because I didn’t give up.” she said.
Radwanska is now above .500 for the year after beating Alison Van Uytvanck in her opener to end a three match losing streak. Her straight sets loss to Naomi Osaka is in something of a better light after her title at Indian Wells but the ease in which she was defeated still remains a concern.
“Yeah, It’s always tough to play against her, because she’s very intelligent. She’s playing soft so is not going to be like today. But she’s very smart on court, and I have to be more aggressive than today. I have to take the ball faster.” Halep said on the matchup with Radwanska, who offers a completely different style to the power of Dodin. The pair are split at 5-5 after 10 meetings although Halep has won 3 of the last 4, most recently at Cincinnati in 2016.
