With the top two seeds now out of the tournament, Elina Svitolina may now being eyeing the Miami Open title as hers heading into the third round clash with Daria Gavrilova. The Ukrainian is yet to make it past the fourth round of Indian Wells and Miami in her career but this year offers her best chance yet.

Despite being a solid top 30 player, Gavrilova rarely commands much attention. She beat Andrea Petkovic in straight sets to make her 9-5 for the year. After making the semi finals in Acapulco, her second of the year, she lost in the third round at Indian Wells to Caroline Garcia with the the same fate likely awaiting her this time as another top 8 seed awaits.
Svitolina was fairly emphatic in ending the run of Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka, winning rather easily in straight sets. She saved 5 of the 6 break point opportunities she faced and dealt with the big hitting of her opponent well. “I was just trying to don’t give her any opportunities. I think I was playing pretty solid today, serving good. This was the key for today. Making it physical, as well.” Svitolina said on her success.
Svitolina will be hoping to make it four straight wins and 5-2 altogether over Gavrilova when she takes to the court on Sunday afternoon. A route to the semi finals likely includes Ashleigh Barty and one of two inconsistent big hitters in Jelena Ostapenko or Petra Kvitova, both of whom Svitolina will feel she can beat.
Prediction – Elina Svitolina in straight sets
