After John Isner’s third round exit, Jack Sock is the home fan’s best hope of a deep run at this tournament in the men’s draw now. Sock will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Somewhat surprisingly, the match will not be contested on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
After toughing out a five setter with Taylor Fritz for the second time this year at a slam, Sock has had it easy the past two rounds. While winning in straights against Mischa Zverev was to be expected, the ease with which he won against Marin Cilic on Friday was a major surprise. Even more impressively, Sock did not face a single break point in the 6-4 6-3 6-3 victory over the 2014 champion.
The ease with which he defeated Cilic will give him confidence in a somewhat similar match up with Tsonga. “I think he’s a guy who likes to lean on the ball. Likes to be attacking and dictating. If I can throw some variety in there, serve well again, and get into some return games, the chances go up for me.” Sock said when asked about the Frenchman.
Tsonga navigated a tricky third round match of his own, defeating Kevin Anderson in straight sets 6-3 6-4 7-6. While break points were not at a premium in this match – there were 22 in total – breaks were with Tsonga taking 2 of his 15 opportunities to Anderson’s 0 in 7 conversion rate. Tsonga has dropped 1 set so far in 3 matches and that was to James Duckworth in round two. It should be a heavy hitting affair and Sock has the potential to cause a shock at his best with the home crowd behind them. They have met once previously with Tsonga winning a third set tiebreak in Madrid last year.
Prediction – Jack Sock in five sets
