After last meeting in one of the first tournaments of the season, Stan Wawrinka and Tomas Berdych will cross paths once again in the final tournament of the 2014 season in London, UK. This marks their 15th meeting on the tour, with Wawrinka leading the head-to-head series 9-5. He has also won their last four consecutive meetings dating back to the Madrid Masters in 2013. Check out the Wawrinka v Berdych H2H matches.
For the second time in his professional career, Stan Wawrinka will compete in the prestigious year-end championships after reaching the semi-final round last season. He eventually fell to world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, but hopes to improve upon his 2013 performances this time around in London. However, Wawrinka has lost four of his last five matches on the tour since helping Switzerland reach the Davis Cup final and will be in a tough spot this week.
“I’m really excited. It’s a dream to play here. It’s a big chance. This year was different from how I qualified last year, so I’m excited to have the chance to play here again.”
With a 54-20 record this season, including 2 titles wins, Tomas Berdych will look to conclude his 2014 season in emphatic fashion with a good showing in London. He holds a 5-8 record at the event, which includes a semi-final run in 2011.
“It’s a tough draw,” said Berdych, at a press conference on Friday. “There are Grand Slam champions in my group, so it is not an easy one. Having Novak in the group, pretty much means one spot is already taken and we’re going to fight for the other spot. I am going to focus on my first match and try to go for it.”
This marks the 15th time that these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Wawrinka leading the series 9-5. While his lead is undeniable, the Swiss star has found himself in a rut recently and will be hard pressed to reverse his fortunes on Monday afternoon.
