For the third time so far this season, Canada’s Vasek Pospisil and Santiago Giraldo will meet on the professional circuit to determine who will advance to a later stage of the tournament. Pospisil leads the head to head series 2-0 with wins in Davis Cup competiton as well as the CitiOpen in Washington.
Following his victory at the Davis Cup that helped send the Canadian team back to the World Group in 2015, Pospisil attempted to build some momentum during the Asian Swing but came up against significant resistance during his first two tournaments in the region. In Shenzhen, Pospisil lost in the second round to Juan Monaco. In Beijing, the Canadian lost to top seed and world NO. 1 Novak Djokovic, who would later go on to win his fifth title at the China Open.
Following a rough patch that saw him win no matches between Toronto and Shenzhen, Santiago Giraldo managed to get back to his winning ways in Shenzhen, where he reached the quarter-final before losing to Tommy Robredo. He would go on to lose his Beijing opener to American John Isner.
This marks the third time these two competitors meet on the professional tour, with both their previous meetings taking place during the 2014 season. Pospisil is clearly the more capable of the two competitors on hard court, so it will be interesting to see if he can pull off a third consecutive win over the Colombian.
Prediction: Vasek Pospisil in Three Sets
