Although she won her third round match against Andrea Petkovic, Romania’s Simona Halep was forced to withdraw from the tournament shortly thereafter citing a hip injury suffered during the match.
The match appeared to be heading towards a straight sets win for the world No. 2, yet Petkovic took advantage of Halep’s injury to force a deciding set and to set up a tiebreaker to end the match. Halep eventually overcame Petkovic’s comeback to finish the match 7-6(4), 5-7, 7-6(1).
“It was a tough match. I was fighting a lot today,” Halep said. “She played really well, but I played better in the important moments, so I think that was the difference.”
Sadly though, not long after the match, Halep had to withdraw from the tournament with a hip injury she aggravated during the opening set. She is still expected to take part in the WTA Finals in Singapore.
Ivanovic will now receive a walkover into the semi-final round of the China Open.
