After handing Serena Williams her worst professional loss on a tennis court since 1998, Simona Halep will look to duplicate her efforts on Sunday afternoon in Singapore – this time in the final of the prestigious year-end WTA Finals. Of their four previous meetings on the tour, Williams still leads the series 3-1, yet has been unable to beat her Romanian adversary in 2014 – her breakthrough season. Check out the Williams v Halep Head to Head.
In the first semi-final on court, Serena Williams was forced to rally from a set down to defeat her good friend Caroline Wozniacki in a third set tiebreak 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(6). The win sends Williams into her third straight final, where she will look to secure a third consecutive year-end crown.
“It’s a new day a new match so who knows what’s going to happen there. I know she’ll be more focused and I just want to enjoy the final “I’m aiming to win at least three games this time.”
In keeping with her remarkable week in Singapore – her debut at the WTA finals – Simona Halep stormed into the final of the tournament with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory over Agnieszka Radwanska. The Romanian completely outclassed her crafty opponent, and left Aga with few opportunities to control the rallies and shotmaking.
“I’m very excited to be in the finals. I didn’t expect this result here and I’ve had to work very hard to play my best tennis here this week,” Halep said. “Agnieszka’s also a great player and I want to congratulate her on reaching the semifinals. I also want to thank everyone that came to support us – they were unbelievable.
“I knew that I’d have to run a lot and that she’s also running very well. I just wanted to play very fast and finish the points very quick and take the ball inside the baseline. My style was to be aggressive. I did that and also served really well.”
This marks the fifth time that Williams and Halep will meet on the professional tour, and the second time at the prestigious year-end championships this season. It is safe to say that Williams will be on high alert this time around, after managing no more than 2 games in her last encounter with the inspired Halep. While Williams is capable of earning the victory at her best, this may be Halep’s time to shine as the year-end WTA champion.
Prediction: Simona Halep in Three Sets
