Traditionally, following the conclusion of the United States Open, the winner of the men’s single final does an extended media tour with all the big broadcast networks and shows in New York. Previously, such winners have included John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, Andre Aggasi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.
This year, to the surprise of many, world No. 12 Marin Cilic is the one making the rounds in New York, and he certainly lived up to expectations, particularly on David Letterman. He appeared on the show to provide his “Top 10” thoughts during the final match.
Watch the clip below:
Cilic is the first maiden Grand Slam winner since Stan Wawrinka defeated Rafael Nadal earlier this season in Australia. His final against Nishikori was the first time that two players outside the Top 10 won the US Open since No. 17 Pete Sampras achieved that in 2002. The last Grand Slam title match with two first-time finalists was at Roland Garros in 2005 when Rafael Nadal defeated Argentine Mariano Puerta.
