For the third time this year, Serena Williams will cross paths with French No. 1 Alize Cornet – a player she has been unable to defeat in 2014. Hoping to be third time lucky, Williams will look to pick up her first post-US Open win on Tuesday afternoon in Wuhan, China. Prior to her two losses to Cornet, Williams held a dominant 3-0 lead in the head-to-head series, which has since shrunk down to a singe match margin at 3-2 following the Wimbledon Championships. It will be interesting to see if the American can turn the tide back in her favour, or if Cornet simply has her number in 2014.

Following a disappointing first-half to her 2014 season, Serena Williams joined an elite duo of tennis legends in the 18-time Grand Slam winners club when she defeated Caroline Wozniacki in the United States Open final. It was a tournament where the top seed remained dominant throughout the fortnight and did not drop a single set en route to the title.

France’s Alize Cornet began her post-US Open season in Guangzhou, where she picked up four victories before losing to Monica Niculescu in the final. She arrived in Wuhan and quickly returned to her winning ways with a rapid-fire 6-2, 6-1 win against Switzerland’s Romina Oprandi. The contest lasted a total of 1 hour and 16 minutes and saw Cornet win 69% of her first service points and convert on 6 of 10 break point opportunities.

This is the sixth time Williams and Cornet will meet on the professional tour, and will serve as arguably their most anticipated encounter yet. With Cornet riding off the confidence of her first two wins over Williams, it will be interesting to see if she can become the first person in years to earn three consecutive victories over Serena in the same year.

Prediction: Serena Williams in Three Sets
