Following a surprising turn of events over the past few days in Wuhan, a blockbuster semi-final encounter has officially been set for Friday afternoon, as Canadian darling Eugenie Bouchard and Danish standout Caroline Wozniacki cross paths for the first time on the WTA tour – making this undoubtedly the match of the day on Friday.
Taking part in the second match on Centre Court, sixth seed Eugenie Bouchard defeated Serena Williams vanquisher Alize Cornet 6-3, 7-5 to reach her first tournament semi-final since the Wimbledon Championships. Bouchard held a 5-2 lead in the second set but let it slip for 5-5 before she broke again to close out the match and reach the next stage of the WTA Premier 5 event.
Bouchard will be motivated to topple her upcoming opponent, as she is two match wins away from a spot in the WTA Finals in Singapore. All that is required of her is a title win this week in Wuhan.
Continuing her trend of strong performances post-US Open, Caroline Wozniacki reached the semi-final round in Wuhan with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Sharapova vanquisher Timea Bacsinszky. The contest lasted 2 hours and 7 minutes and saw the Dane hit 3 aces, win 65% of her firsts service points and convert 4 of 6 break point opportunities.
“I think always when I go out to a match I believe I can win and I believe that I’m the better player. But obviously whenever you’re on a winning streak and have been playing a lot of matches and winning them, I think you make smarter decisions and better decision and go more for your shot in important points. I think that’s really the difference right now.
“Whenever I know that this can be important or can be, you know, deciding in the match, I feel like I have stepped it up and made the right choices. I’m feeling good. I’m playing well. Hopefully I can keep it going till the end of the year, and hopefully next year I can start and finish the year well.”
Although both competitors are staples in the upper echelon of the WTA rankings, this will serve as their first ever meeting on the professional tour. It is a difficult one to gauge as well, as Bouchard has the game to overwhelm Wozniacki, yet the Dane has been playing some inspired tennis as of late.
Simply sit back and enjoy the action.
