Sam Stosur

An exciting second round match-up is scheduled to take place in Beijing, as Caroline Wozniacki and Sam Stosur will meet for the eighth time on the professional tour. The Dane leads the head-to-head series 4-3 including a victory over the Australian this season in Eastbourne.

Caroline Wozniacki concluded her US Open Series with a splendid fortnight in New York, where she defeated a gauntlet of opponents, including Andre Petkovic, Maria Sharapova, Sara Errani and Shuai Peng to reach the final of the US Open. While she ultimately fell short to Serena Williams, it was clear that the Dane was back in her pre-2010 form. She would follow up with a strong showing in Tokyo, where she worked her way to the final before losing to an inspired Ana Ivanovic in straight sets, and a semi-final showing in Wuhan, where she lost to Eugenie Bouchard.

“There’s still a long way to go,” Wozniacki said on Sunday. “I’ll just try and do the same as I’m doing every year: try and fight as hard as I can. It’s the best players in the world here, so obviously it’s a very hard tournament to play. And at the end of the day we all need to win our first matches.”

Although it started out as a competitive encounter, Sam Stosur won eight of nine games from 3-4 down to defeat Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 6-2. The contest lasted a total of 1 hour and 32 minutes and saw the Australian hit 5 aces, win 76% of her first service points and break serve on four separate occasions to secure her spot in the second round of the tournament.

Wozniacki and Stosur have crossed paths on seven different occasions on the WTA tour, with the Dane leading the series 4-3. While Wozniacki leads the overall series, Stosur has proven more efficient on hard courts and leads that series 2-1. Based simply off their more recent performances on the tour, the inspired Caroline should route Stosur in three sets.

Prediction: Caroline Wozniacki in Three Sets
