Sloane Stephens US Open

One of the more notable Americans in the US Open is young prospect Sloane Stephens, who will begin her campaign at Flushing Meadows against Germany’s Annika Beck. This is the first time they cross paths on the professional tour and could make for an entertaining encounter.

It has been a mostly forgettable year for Sloane Stephens. Since losing in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships to Maria Kirilenko, she began her hard court season with a loss to Christina McHale in Washington, before rebounding with slightly better showings in Montreal and Cincinnati, where she reached the second and third round respectively. She has accumulated a 3-3 record during the US Open Series, which does not bode well for her chances in New York this coming fortnight.

Germany’s Annika Beck holds more wins during the US Open Series than her opponent, but they mostly came during the qualifying stages of the tournaments. She failed to reach the main draw in Montreal or New Haven but enjoyed a good week in Cincinnati, where she picked up a main draw win over Garibine Muguruza before losing to Jelena Jankovic in the second round.

This marks the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour and could be a more competitive encounter than most would consider it to be. Stephens has lacked consistency in her game this season and has suffered a variety of losses to players of Beck’s caliber so this could be no exception. The American will need to work hard to reach the second round of the tournament.

Prediction: Sloane Stephens in Three Sets
