Simona Halep vs Danielle Rose Collins Preview – US Open 2014 Round 1

Simona Halep

Second seed Simona Halep will look to begin her US Open campaign in better shape than she started her New Haven run last week, and will be keen to impress with a dominant performance to erase the memory of that surprising loss in Connecticut. Her first match-up is against Danielle Rose Collins, whom she has never met before on the professional tour.

Following her trips to the final of the French Open and the semi-final of the Wimbledon Championships, which all served the purpose of propelling her further up the ranks, Halep transitioned onto hard courts, where she defeated Kirsten Flipkens and Lucie Safarova before losing to Maria Sharapova in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Halep’s surge through the rankings has taken her all the way to world No. 2, where she will now replace Li Na after the Chinese No. 1 was forced to withdraw from the entire US Open series due to a knee injury. Sadly, she would have her strong momentum halted in New Haven, where she would lose to eventual finalist Magdaelna Rybarikova in her opening match at the tournament.

Danielle Rose Collins is coming off a loss in the qualifying round in new Haven, where she lost to Su-Wei Hsieh 6-4, 6-3.

This marks the first time these tow competitors will meet on the professional tour and should serve as a straightforward contest that heavily favours the Romanian star. Halep should win this contest in straight sets en route to the second round in Flushing Meadows.

Prediction: Simona Halep in Straight Sets
