Following a surprisingly close match on Tuesday afternoon, world No. 1 Serena Williams will continue her campaign at the Western & Southern Open when she meets Italy’s Flavia Pennetta for the fifth time on the WTA tour. Check out the Williams vs Pennetta Head to Head.

Unlike her match with Sam Stosur last week, Williams had a fight on her hands on Tuesday afternoon when she stepped across the net from her Australian adversary. While Stosur only managed to win two games against Williams in Montreal, this match could not have been more different, as there were no breaks of serve on either side and only one break point opportunity for either player.

“She was up in both of the breakers,” Williams said. “I think it was just a great match. She served unbelievably, and I was like, ‘I can’t lose serve because she’s just serving great.’ It was really intense. She was extremely aggressive today. She made very few unforced errors. She just did everything really well. This is why she was able to win a Grand Slam.”

In fact, Stosur had the advantage in both sets, as she held a 4-0 lead in the 1st set tiebreak and also had two set points in the second set tiebreak before losing the match 7-6(7), 7-6(7).

“I actually followed through with all of the things I wanted to do last week,” Stosur said. “It was a huge improvement, and I’m really pleased with the way I played. I’m disappointed I had a couple of set points and didn’t at least win that set to take it to a third. But I gave myself every chance to try to get through that one. She came up with some really great stuff when it really counted.”

After losing her first hard court match of the US Open Series in Montreal, Pennetta got back to her winning ways in Cincinnati, starting with a three set victory over Chanelle Sheepers before following up with a 6-4, 6-3 win over American qualifier Taylor Townsend.

This will mark the fifth time that Williams and Pennetta will meet on the WTA tour and the first time this season. Williams has only ever dropped one set to the Italian and that was over six years ago in Miami. Since then, Pennetta has won a total of nine games in three matches against the top seed.

Prediction: Serena Williams in Straight Sets
