An all-French match-up is set to take place in the third round of the US Open on Sunday evening, as Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet clash for the eleventh time on the professional tour. Monfils leads the Head-to-Head series 6-4 and will look to extend that lead further with another win over his fellow countryman.

20th seed Gael Monfils defeated Alejandro Gonzalez 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 to set up his upcoming encounter with the No. 2 ranked Frenchman. He struck 8 aces, 45 winners and converted 7 of 17 break points to earn his 15th win at the US Open. He did hit 10 double faults and only managed 50% of his first service points, but eventually concluded the match in 2 hours and 7 minutes.

12th seed Richard Gasquet also needed just straight sets to defeat Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi 7-6, 6-3, 6-3. He hit 14 aces, a total of 51 winners and won 78% of his first service points to secure the victory in 2 hours and 18 minutes.

This marks the tenth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Monfils leading the head-to-head series 6-4. Although that may be the case, Gasquet has played the better tennis leading up to this third round encounter and it is likely that he will manage a 4-5 set victory over Monfils after tiring him out in the latter stages of the contest.

Prediction: Richard Gasquet in Five Sets
