 Novak Djokovic

2011 US Open champion Novak Djokovic stormed into the third round at Flushing Meadows, where he will now meet the big-serving American Sam Querrey for the ninth time on the professional tour. The Serbian star leads the head-to-head series 7-1.

Top seed and last year’s runner-up Novak Djokovic reached the third round of the US Open with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 victory over France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu. The Serb hit 13 aces, and converted on 7 of 12 break point opportunities to secure his spot in the following round in less than 90 minutes of court time.

“I wanted to get my job done as quick as possible,” said Djokovic. “I don’t feel like I need to play long matches to get into the groove. I feel that I’m hitting the ball very well. [The] second match [was] even better than the first one. Under the circumstances, I think I came up with a very good performance. [I] stayed mentally tough and [I did] not allow myself to get frustrated because of the wind and conditions that were obviously very tough for both of us.”

Djokovic’s next opponent is big-serving American Sam Querrey, whom he leads 7-1 in the head-to-head series.

“Sam is playing in front of his crowd. I’m sure that he’s going to have some good support. But on the other hand, if we get to play on center court maybe [in a] night session, that’s where my experience kicks in. If he serves well he’s very dangerous. I saw a little bit of his match today and he played great. He’s in good form, good shape, and has nothing to lose. It’s going to be a tough one.”

Querrey also needed just the three sets to secure entry into the third round of the US Open, as he defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Querrey hit 16 aces, won 88% of his first service points and a total of 39 winners to secure the win in 1 hour and 45 minutes.

“There is not many American men in the draw to begin with. He was kind of referring to all of us. You know, if Novak wins next round I have to play him; that will be a tough one. I hope we can have a few guys in the second week. That would be great for men’s tennis here.”

Prediction: Novak Djokovic in Straight Sets
