Grigor Dimitrov vs Jerzy Janowicz Preview – ATP Cincinnati 2014 Round 2

Jerzy Janowicz

Two of the breakout stars in 2013 will meet in second round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Grigor Dimitrov, who has risen to the Top 10 in the world, and Jerzy Janowicz, who rose to fame at last year’s Wimbledon Championships but has since suffered a steep downhill slide. While this contest would have been a more enticing affair last season, it is still a compelling first-time meeting between two of the later additions to the ATP World Tour.

Even though he did not look his best at the time, Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov managed to make a deep run at the Rogers Cup and did not lose until he encountered eventual champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi- final stage of the tournament. It was still a promising start to the US Open Series and he will look to carry the momentum forth in hopes of another deep run this week in Cincinnati.

Following a surge in 2013, Jerzy Janowicz has had a largely forgettable 2014 season so far. With a losing record and a plague of defeats that kept him from stringing back-to-back wins until Wimbledon, Janowicz has suffered a significant slump in the rankings and is in dire need of a strong conclusion to the year. He continued his losing ways in Toronto before rebounding with a win over Gabashvelli in the opening round in Cincinnati.

This is the first time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour and it could make for an entertaining match-up. Dimitrov has been far more consistent as is evident with his surge in the rankings and multiple title wins. Janowicz has been less than stellar since his rise over a year ago and it will take an impressive showing to topple the Bulgarian youngster on Wednesday.

Prediction: Grigor Dimitrov in Straight Sets
