World No. 7 Eugenie Bouchard has officially withdrawn from the Citi Open in Washington next week, according to tournament officials. Lucie Safarova will replace the Canadian as the top seed at the tournament.
The 20-year-old Canadian darling;s most recent tournament was the Wimbledon Championships, where she worked her way through a formidable draw to arrive at her final obstacle in 2011 champion Petra Kvitova. It was never going to be an easy encounter and the tide quickly turned against Bouchard. The youngster was unable to get her game going and struggled significantly with her serve throughout the contest, ultimately surrendering the match 6-3, 6-0.
To add to her consistency this season, she is the only female competitor on the WTA tour this season to reach the semi-final or better in all three of the Grand Slam tournaments so far.
Bouchard is still expected to take part in the Rogers Cup in Montreal, which takes place between August 4-10. The Citi Open takes place between July 25-August 3 in Washington, DC.
