The United States Tennis Association announced that World No. 1 and two-time defending champion Serena Williams will headline the women’s singles field for the 2014 US Open Tennis Championships.
Williams, a 17-time Grand Slam winner, has failed to secure any major championships this season, losing before the quarter-final stage of all three Grand Slam tournaments placed so far this season. She lost in the fourth round at the Australian Open, the second round at Roland Garros and the third round of the Wimbledon Championships. She now has one more opportunity to redeem her relatively weak 2014 season.
In addition to Williams, No. 2 and reigning Australian Open champion Li Na, No. 3 Simona Halep and No. 4 Petra Kvitova round out the field’s Top 4. They will be followed by world No. 5 Agnieszka Radwanska, No. 6 Sharapova, No. 7 Eugenie Bouchard, No. 8 Angelique Kerber, No. 9 Jelena Jankovic, and No. 10 Victoria Azarenka.
The event will also feature several former champions, including 2006 US Open champion Maria Sharapova, reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, two-time US Open champion Venus Williams and former Open winners Samantha Stosur and Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Sixteen more players will gain entry through the US Open Qualifying Tournament, held Aug. 19-22, while the remaining eight spots are wild cards awarded by the USTA.
Seeds will be determined and announced closer to the start of the event.
The 2014 US Open will be played August 25 through September 8 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
