After securing his maiden title on the ATP World Tour, Leonardo Mayer has another goal he would like to achieve in the near future, which is to face his “idol” Roger Federer in a professional contest.
Mayer has been playing on the ATP World Tour since 2003 but has never crossed paths with the 17-time Grand Slam champion. That is something he would like to rectify in the near future.
“Roger Federer is my idol. I have been following him since a very long time. I really hope that we get a chance to play against one another in a tournament before he retires, because I want him to give me a tennis lesson. I hope one day I will meet him and I will have a chance to have fun on the court”.
The world No. 46 won his first ATP World Tour title on Sunday after he defeated top seed David Ferrer in three tight sets to win the bet-at-home Open in Hamburg. After advancing to the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships last month, as well as his first ATP final in February at Vina del Mar, the Argentine was finally able to break through and earn his first title on the professional tour.
Mayer became the lowest-ranked winner of an ATP World Tour 500 tournament since No. 54 Radek Stepanek won the Citi Open in Washington in 2011.
