Simona Halep

Following impressive performances in their opening round contests, fourth seed Simona Halep and former British No. 1 Heather Watson will clash in the second round of the French Open on Thursday afternoon. They met last year at the US Open in an entertaining three set battle and they could be heading for a similar encounter this time around in Paris. Check out the Halep vs Watson Head to Head.

The world No. 4 got off to a fantastic start in Paris, as she stormed past Alisa Kleybanova 6-0, 6-2, winning the first 11 games in the process. The whole match lasted less than an hour, and considering the first set was a bagel and lasted only 25 minutes, it appeared that the match was going to be even shorter until Alisa finally got on the scoreboard with 2 games.

“It was amazing to play on Chatrier. It was my first time on this court – it’s so big,” Halep said. “I had a bit of experience because I practiced two times here, and also the Kids’ Day two days ago.

“I think I did well today. And she’s a great player on clay. But today I felt really good and I had a good feeling with the ball and with my game. Now I need to keep focused for the next round.”

Next for Halep is a match-up against Heather Watson, who also had a comfortable win against Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova.

“She’s come up through the rankings very quickly. I’m really not surprised at that because she’s got a good game. She’s very solid and makes a lot of balls. I played her at the US Open last year. “It went to a third set. I started on fire, really well, but I kind of crashed and didn’t have any energy towards the end. I’m looking forward to it.”

Halep also remembers the contest:

“I could not forget,” she said, “because I played around three hours and 30 minutes. She was very strong and it was a difficult match. But here it is on clay, so it will be different. Another day, another match.”

Prediction: Simona Halep in Three Sets
