Serena Williams vs Carla Suarez Navarro Preview – WTA Madrid Open 2014 Round 3

Serena Williams

Following her dominant displays in the opening two rounds of the Mutua Madrid Open, world No. 1 Serena Williams will look to continue that streak when she meets Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro for the fourth time on the WTA tour. Williams is undefeated in their three previous encounters in the head-to-head series, including a clay court win last season in Rome.

After a month away from the tennis court, it is clear that Serena Williams is happy to be back on court, and is taking it out on her unlucky opponents. Her latest victim was Peng Shuai, whom she defeated 6-2, 6-3 without much trouble (or effort). Williams’ serve was impeccable, as she struck 11 aces past Peng, and only allowed her to win one point in her return games. The contest was over in just over an hour.

Her next contest is likely to be another dominant performance, as Williams holds a fantastic record against Navarro, even scoring a double bagel on the Spaniard in their last meeting at the U.S Open last year.

The World No. 15 began her week in Madrid with a straight sets victory over Yvonne Meusburger and followed up with another straight sets win over Alison Riske to set up the third round match-up against Williams. Navarro is coming off her first ever WTA title win last week at the Portugal Open.

This marks the fourth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Williams leading the series with an impenetrable 3-0 record. Apart from the double bagel in their last meeting, Williams has only dropped five games in three matches against Navarro and it is hard to imagine Thursday’s contest being any less one-sided.

Prediction: Serena Williams in Straight Sets
