 Serena Willams WTA

The second semi final at the Internazionali BNL Italia was played on Court Centrale between top seeded Serena Williams and 11th seeded Ana Ivanovic. Williams had a first round bye and lost a total of just ten games in her next three rounds to make it to the semis. Ivanovic had an easy first round match followed by a tough 7-6 (7-1) 7-5 win against Alize Cornet in the second round before causing a major upset when she took out 8th seeded Maria Sharapova with ease, 6-1 6-4 in the third round. She had to work really hard to get past Carla Surarez Navarroin three in the quarters.

Williams served first and the first three games went with serve. The American then broke for 3-1 and took the set 6-1 in just 30 minutes as the Serb’s serve crumbled. Williams got in 70% of her first serves, while Ivanovic managed just 38%; and Williams was way ahead in all the other stats as well. Ivanovic got the second set under way and totally reversed the stats of the first set by getting in 90% of her first serves against Williams’ 28%, to break twice and lead 4-0 after 25 minutes. The American got back one break in the 5th game and held to love in the next game. The next two games went with serve until the Serb served out the set at 6-2 to force a decider. Williams started the third set and turned things around once again, racing to a 5-0 lead with the Serb serving to stay in the set. She held to get on the scoreboard but it was her last shout, as Williams served out the set at 6-1 after an hour and 36 minutes on court to move into yet another final.
