 Li Na French Open

Second seed Li Na will begin her 2014 Roland Garros campaign with a first round contest against Kristina Mladenovic, whom she has previously faced at this very tournament four years ago. It was their only other career meeting and Li won it comfortably 7-5, 6-3.

After reaching the semi-finals in Miami, Li Na began her clay court season with a quarter-final showing in Madrid, where she lost to Maria Sharapova. She would follow that up with another quarter-final loss in Rome, this time to Italy’s Sara Errani. She has been off the tour since then preparing for her run in the French Open.

The Chinese No. 1 is defending second round points at the event, as she lost to Bethanie Mattek-Sands last year at that stage of the tournament.

World No. 103 Kristina Mladenovic is coming off a first round loss to Ajia Tomljanovic in the opening round in Strasbourg last week and will now be faced with a far tougher opener in Paris. The loss was her fifth straight WTA main draw defeat and she is unlikely to snap that streak anytime soon.

This is the second time these two competitors meet on the professional tour, with Li leading the head-to-head series 1-0. Their only other meeting took place in Roland Garros back in 2010, which Li won comfortably 7-5, 6-3. This will likely result in a similar outcome.

Prediction: Li Na in Straight Sets
