Suarez Navarro

Top 15 competitors Ana Ivanovic and Carla Suarez Navarro will meet in the quarter-final round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Friday afternoon. It will mark the second time that they cross paths on the WTA tour, and the first time since 2012. Ivanovic leads the head-to-head series 1-0.

On a day where Tommy Haas upset Stanislas Wawrinka, Ana Ivanovic came along to pull of arguably the bigger upset, when she defeated Maria Sharapova in straight sets to reach the quarter-final round. Her victory snapped a seven-match losing streak to the Russian, and became the first person not named Serena Williams to defeat Sharapova on clay since 2011.

Ivanovic was in remarkable form, as she played far better than her (also in form) opponent, as the Serb hit 22 winners to 13 unforced errors, while Sharapova, who also maintained positive stats, hit 16 winners to 14 unforced errors. Ivanovic also managed 5/8 of her break point opportunities against Sharapova.

Next for the Serbian No. 2 is a match-up against Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro, who did not hit a single ball in the third round, as her opponent Simona Halep withdrew from the event with an abdominal injury.

While Ivanovic leads the head-to-head series 1-0, the contest took place on hard court and ended in a retirement. It is also dated two years ago, and both are vastly different competitors in 2014. Ivanovic may be coming off a spectacular victory, but she has been known to be inconsistent following such strong wins. (i.e. Australian Open victory over Serena Williams)

Prediction: Ana Ivanovic in Three Sets
