  Grigor Dimitrov

Top seed Grigor Dimitrov and France’s Gael Monfils are scheduled to meet in what is expected to be a highly entertaining semi-final match in Bucharest on Saturday afternoon. This is the first time they will meet in almost three years, and the second time overall with Monfils leading the series 1-0. Check out the Dimitrov vs Monfils Head to Head.

World No. 16 Grigor Dimitrov lost just seven of his first service points en route to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sergiy Stakhovsky on Friday evening. The top seed hit 2 aces and won 80% of his first service points to set up a semi-final against third seed Gael Monfils. The Bulgarian has already won one title this season and is still the favourite to lift the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy for the first time in his career.

“It could have easily gone both ways, as he is a dangerous player and a good serve and volleyer,” said Dimitrov. “It was really heavy conditions, so I am happy to have won. I just tried to be solid.”

Monfils beat fellow Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, a qualifier, 3-6, 7-6(8), 6-2 in two hours and 21 minutes.

“I played very poorly today,” said Monfils. “I was too defensive, but I got lucky. On two or three of the match points he got tight. I am very frustrated. I managed to win, which is the only good point. I did not deserve this match, one of the worst I played this year.”

This marks the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Monfils leading the head-to-head series 1-0. The last time they met was at the 2011 US Open, which was well before Dimitrov grew into his current form. This time around the Bulgarian is brimming with confidence and higher ranked than his French counterpart and will look to even up the h2h and edge himself one step closer to his second title of the season.

Prediction: Grigor Dimitrov in Three Sets
