Flavia Pennetta

The Premier Mandatory level BNP Paribas Open left significant changes in the WTA rankings. With top ranked Serena Williams absent from the event, it was an opportunity for other competitors to shine, with Radwanska, Li Na, Simona Halep and Flavia Pennetta all given moments to shine in the tournament.

32-year-old Pennetta’s title win was not only the biggest of her career, it lifted her to the 12th spot in the WTA ranking, ahead of Ana Ivanovic, Sloane Stephens and Eugenie Bouchard. Romania’s Simona Halep had the most noticeable boost, as she reached a career-high of world No. 5 after reaching the semi-finals at Indian Wells. Defending champion Maria Sharapova had  tough week at the California Desert, as the defending champion exited the event in the third round to Italy’s Camila Giorgi, which dropped her out of the Top 5 to world No. 7, where she is currently ranked below Jelena Jankovic.
