Top-ranked Serena Williams is through to the quarter-finals in Miami, where she will cross paths with Germany’s Angelique Kerber for the fifth time on the WTA tour. The American leads the head-to-head series 3-1 and will be looking to add a fourth win en route to the semi-finals. Check out the Williams vs Kerber H2H.
World No. 1 Serena Williams cruised into the quarter-finals in Miami following a 6-3, 6-1 win over fellow American CoCo Vandeweghe. Compared to her previous two contests this week, it was a fantastic showing from Williams, who hit 17 winners and saved all six of the break points she faced on her serve.
“It was a much tougher match than the scoreline showed,” Williams said after the match. “CoCo has such an amazing serve, so every time I was returning I was like, ‘Hopefully I can touch the ball.’ But it was really good for me to win this match today. I love playing here in Miami.”
The defending champion will need another strong performance to fend off the German No. 1 Angelique Kerber on Tuesday evening.
“It’ll be completely different – Angelique is really good and moves really, really well,” Williams said. “I feel better than I did in my first few matches, though, so I hope I can keep going forward.”
While Williams had a relatively easy straight forward fourth round match, world No. 9 Angelique Kerber was forced to go three sets with Ekaterina Makarova, after the Russian snatched the second set 6-1. She eventually overcame the mental lapse to win the match 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 – evening up the head-to-head series 4-4.
Williams leads Kerber 3-1 in the head-to-head series, having won their two most recent matches – both of which took place at the WTA Championships in Istanbul. The American will certainly be the favourite for tomorrow’s match-up and will be determined to edge herself closer to a seventh title in Miami.
