 John Isner Indian Wells

Local favourite John Isner and Spain’s Fernando Verdasco will meet for a spot in the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.  This is only the second time they will meet on the professional tour, with Verdasco earning the victory in their first meeting at the 2009 US Open. He will be looking to upset the American once again on home soil to advance to the final eight in the California Desert. Check out the Isner vs Verdasco Head to Head.

Spain’s Fernando Verdasco picked up a straight sets victory over world No. 9 Richard Gasquet to reach the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open. Verdasco converted 2/10 break points, while saving all 8 of the break points he faced. It was the second time Verdasco has defeated Gasquet at this stage of the tournament in Indian Wells, having done the same five years ago before reaching the quarter-finals.  This time he is faced with a tall task in John Isner, if he is to reach the final eight of the tournament.

In a rematch of their Auckland final two months back, John Isner once again defeated Yen-Hsun Lu 6-4, 6-4 to reach the fourth round as the only American male left in the draw. Isner, who hit 13 aces and lost six of his first service points, needed only 68 minutes to earn the victory this time around.

Verdasco leads the head-to-head series 1-0 with a four set victory over Isner in the fourth round of the 2009 US Open. Considering much has changed about both players over the past four years, that contest should not leave us with a pre-determined assumption of the outcome on Wednesday afternoon. Isner has been far from his best over the past 12 months, while Verdasco has been a resurgent force following his quarter-final showdown with Andy Murray at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships. Considering the Spaniard has already upset world No. 9 Richard Gasquet, he is more than capable of upsetting John Isner in three sets.

Prediction: Fernando Verdasco in Three Sets
