Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and Monica Puig will meet for the first time on the professional tour in the second round of the Sony Open in Miami.
After it had appeared that Wozniacki had finally gotten a strong grip on the 2014 season with her semi-final showing in Dubai, she was unable to follow through and would lose to Jelena Jankovic in the fourth round at Indian Wells. Her poor results and frequent shift in coaches has seen her drop to No. 18 in the rankings for the first time in five years. Now 8-5 this season, Wozniacki will need a strong showing in Miami to minimize the damage and limit her time outside the Top 10 in the WTA rankings.
Monica Puig earned a 6-1, 7-6(7) victory in her opening round match in Miami to arrange the upcoming clash against Wozniacki. Prior to that, the world No. 58 had lost in the opening round in Indian Wells. This is just her second victory this season, as she won one of her matches at the Australian Open in January. She will be looking to pick up consecutive wins for the first time in 2014 when she faces the former world No. 1 tomorrow.
This is the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour and will likely be an entertaining contest. Wozniacki will need an emphatic victory to lift her spirits and garner momentum for her to go deep into the draw.
Prediction: Caroline Wozniacki in Three Sets
